At U-M, the importance of this growing field is being emphasized by offering a Certificate in Engineering Education Research and the hiring of engineering education research (EER) faculty members appointed in traditional engineering departments. Currently, there are four core EER faculty members in engineering (Shanna Daly, Mechanical Engineering; Cindy Finelli, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Aileen Huang-Saad, Biomedical Engineering; and Joi-Lynn Mondisa, Industrial and Operations Engineering) and a fifth core EER faculty member who has a courtesy appointment in engineering (Lisa Lattuca, Higher Education). This session offers an opportunity to practice active learning techniques by presenting a lesson to a small peer group. In advance, participants review short online videos about active learning. Then, participants plan and deliver a 10-minute lesson using active learning. Finally, participants reflect on their experience and exchange supportive feedback.

The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching in Engineering (CRLT-Enginat the University of Michigan invites applications for an Instructional Consultant position focused on engineering graduate student instructor development. 

Applicants should hold a PhD in engineering, engineering education, or other STEM-related field. Applicants with extensive experience will be considered for an assistant director title. Effective use of groups in the classroom can increase student learning and enhance students' problem solving abilities, if instructors ensure that all students are engaged and included. In this session, participants will explore research-based frameworks to enhance teamwork skills, engage students, increase cooperative learning, and support dysfunctional teams.
