Students in Blended Synchronous Courses Will Be Less Attentive: What Can We Do?

Based on recent research (Samson, 2020: Student behaviors in a blended synchronous course, J. Geosciences Education, 1- 10, https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10899995.2020.1768002) there is evidence that students online tend to be less attentive compared to attentiveness for those immersed in the classroom. With the move to blended synchronous and asynchronous modes of delivery in the future, what can we do as instructors to incentivize attentiveness and participation? This talk demonstrates techniques used in a blended synchronous course, Extreme Weather, over the past several semesters and the associated student behaviors.
