GTC Call For Applications

The application for the 2021-2022 CRLT Graduate Student Instructional Consultant (GSIC) program is now closed. If you are interested in applying next year, please submit your information on this form

The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is recruiting Graduate Student Instructional Consultants (GSICs) for Fall 2021-Winter 2022. We are seeking applications from experienced graduate student instructors (GSIs) who are committed to excellence and innovation in teaching, and who strive to create inclusive learning environments in which all students and instructors can succeed.

GSICs further CRLT’s reach by consulting with peers (GSIs) across the U-M community, and in doing so, gain practical experience in the field of educational development. We expect and support our GSICs to work effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity and have familiarity with inclusive teaching practices. GSICs receive initial and ongoing training by CRLT to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  • Consult with GSIs to advance strategies for inclusive teaching across the university
  • Consult with GSIs on a variety of additional teaching related topics (syllabus design. active learning, design of group work and in-class activities, etc.)
  • Collect midterm student feedback from students and debrief this feedback with GSIs
  • Engage in professional development with other GSICs in a collaborative community of practice

The GSIC group will consist of approximately 20-25 graduate student consultants from a variety of disciplines across U-M. GSICs are compensated beginning at $22.00 per hour. The scheduling of hours is fairly flexible based on the availability of the GSICs and the needs of the Center. We estimate 1-5 hours per week during the academic year.

At this time, we cannot confirm what the format of our GSI consulting services will be for the entirety of the Fall 2021 - Winter 2022 academic year. We will likely begin in the fall by offering many remote and some in-person consulting services, with a move toward more in-person as the COVID situation allows. Above all, please note that CRLT will follow all public health guidance from university leadership as we make decisions about how to best serve our U-M community.

To apply, please fill out the application here. You may preview the application here. Deadline for applications is Monday, March 15, 2021 at 5:00pm. Promising applicants will be contacted for an interview, which will take place (remotely via Zoom) in mid-April 2021. Hiring decisions will be communicated by May 10, 2021 at the latest.

As part of the application, you will be asked to upload the following documents:

  1. A C.V. or resume, including a list of courses taught
  2. Student course evaluations from at least two terms (quantitative and/or qualitative course evaluations; no additional student letters should be solicited)

For additional information, see <>.

For questions about the GSIC program, please contact the GSIC Coordinators (

Please note: If you will have completed two semesters of teaching before Fall 2021, you are welcome to apply!
