Resource Title:
GTC Call For Applications
Course Type:

The application for the 2022-2023 CRLT Graduate Student Instructional Consultant (GSIC) program is now OPEN. Applications will be accepted until 5:00 pm on Friday, March 18.

The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is recruiting Graduate Student Instructional Consultants (GSICs) for Fall 2022-Winter 2023. We are seeking applications from graduate students across campus who have experience being graduate student instructors (GSIs). Successful candidates are those who demonstrate commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching, and who strive to further equity focused teaching environments in which all students and instructors can succeed.

GSICs further CRLT’s reach by consulting with peers (GSIs) across the U-M community, and in doing so, gain practical experience in the field of educational development. We expect and support our GSICs to work effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity and have familiarity with equity focused teaching practices. GSICs receive initial and ongoing training by CRLT to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  • Consult with GSIs to advance strategies for equity focused teaching across the university
  • Consult with GSIs on a variety of teaching related topics (syllabus design, active learning, design of group work and in-class activities, etc.)
  • Consult with GSIs on student evaluations feedback
  • Provide feedback to GSIs and graduate students on their teaching philosophy statements
  • Conduct classroom observations and midterm student feedback sessions, and debrief this feedback with GSIs
  • Engage in training and professional development with other GSICs in a collaborative community of practice

The GSIC group will consist of approximately 20-25 graduate student consultants from a variety of disciplines across U-M. GSICs are compensated beginning at $22.00 per hour. The scheduling of hours is fairly flexible based on the availability of the GSICs and the needs of the Center. We estimate 1-5 hours per week during the academic year.

At this time, we cannot confirm what the format of our GSI consulting services will be for the entirety of the Fall 2022 - Winter 2023 academic year. Currently, our services are both in person and remote. In Fall 2022 and beyond, we anticipate a move to more in-person services with continuing flexibility. Above all, please note that CRLT will follow all public health guidance from university leadership as we make decisions about how to best serve our U-M community.

To apply, please fill out the application here. You may preview the application here. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 18 at 5:00pm. Promising applicants will be contacted for an interview, which will take place (remotely via Zoom) in mid-April 2022. Hiring decisions will be communicated by May 9, 2022 at the latest.

As part of the application, you will be asked to upload the following documents:

  1. A C.V. or resume, including a list of courses taught
  2. Student course evaluations from at least two terms (quantitative and/or qualitative course evaluations; no additional student letters should be solicited)

For additional information, see <>.

Please note: If you will have completed two semesters of teaching before Fall 2022, you are welcome to apply!
