August 19-September 11, 2020

Chinese Version Application Previous Years' China Fellows

Fellows sharing what they learned  and their action plans for their home institutions

Enhancing educational quality is an important priority of the State Guidelines for Medium-to-Long-Term Education Reform and Development Plan between 2010 and 2020 of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China. The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is ideally suited to provide expertise on teaching improvement and student learning for Chinese universities. CRLT was the first teaching center in the United States, established in 1962 at the University of Michigan (U-M), where it has celebrated 50 years of successful programs and services. There are teaching centers at more than 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities, and all of the country’s top research universities have one, including the Ivy League universities and the Big Ten. CRLT is widely viewed as the model for the others.
MOE has entrusted U-M’s CRLT to organize and implement multiple Seminars for top administrators from elite Chinese universities since 2006. As part of CRLT’s plan to assist top Chinese research universities in establishing and developing effective teaching centers, CRLT proposes to offer a faculty development program for teaching center directors, who will be called CRLT Fellows. The goal of the Fellows program is to provide intensive, hands-on training in faculty development for teaching center staff at top Chinese universities. We describe the details of this program below, for your consideration.
2018 Fellows with
U-M President Schlissel
  1. From August 19-September 11, 2020, CRLT will host up to 10 CRLT Fellows for a training program that prepares them to run a successful teaching center.
  2. The Fellows must plan to work in the teaching center of their home university upon the completion of the CRLT program. They should be teaching center directors, assistant directors, or center staff.
  3. All Fellows must be fluent in English.
  4. As part of the program, the Fellows will receive advanced training on consultations, leading workshops, observing classes, promoting active learning and critical thinking, and other core tasks associated with the work of teaching center staff.
  5. CRLT will include Fellows in multiple CRLT orientations that occur at the start of the fall term, including New Faculty Orientation, New Graduate Student Instructor Teaching Orientation.
  6. CRLT will include Fellows in various other CRLT events and workshops.
  7. CRLT will arrange a program for Fellows on initial needs assessment to plan faculty development programs and services, and then evaluation of the programs and services.
  8. Fellows will visit classes of outstanding U-‐M faculty to learn about incorporating innovative pedagogies (e.g., creative and critical thinking, active learning and group work, instructional technology) into courses of various sizes and disciplines.
  9. U-‐M will provide Fellows with space in a group office.

Fellows receive a certificate of completion

CRLT will charge each fellow’s institution $13,500, which covers the cost of the program and lodgings. The Chinese universities are responsible for travel costs for their staff between China and Ann Arbor, health insurance, and meals. The universities with an interest in sending applicants for the CRLT Fellows Program should notify CRLT Executive Director Dr. Matt Kaplan ([email protected]) or Assistant Director Dr.Erping Zhu ([email protected]) by March 31, 2020.  CRLT can accommodate a maximum of 10 Fellows in 2020, so it is important to notify Dr. Kaplan or Dr. Zhu as soon as possible.
