Please be aware that this session will be held on north campus in the Gorguze Family Laboratory (Room 216). 

Acknowledging troubling events and tragedies (on campus, and on a national/international scale) is crucial for students’ sense of belonging in a class but can be challenging to do well, particularly when course content is seemingly unconnected to the event or tragedy.  This practice teaching session gives faculty an opportunity to address a campus incident with a small group of students in a simulated STEM classroom (with CRLT undergraduate student consultants playing the role of students).  Faculty can choose one of two approaches to addressing the incident with the “students”:  either deliver a brief (5-minute) statement or facilitate a short 10-15 minute discussion. After the faculty member practices their approach, the students and a CRLT-Engin/CRLT consultant will provide feedback. Following all of the presentations, faculty will reflect on the practice experience with their colleagues.

Note:  Participants are strongly encouraged to attend the Teaching in Tumultuous Times workshop prior to attending the practice teaching session.
