LSA / CRLT Large Course Initiative
Teaching Beyond COVID: A Special Edition of the LSA / CRLT Large Course Initiative
Members of the LSA faculty are invited to apply to participate in the Winter 2021 special edition of the LSA / CRLT Large Course Initiative titled, Teaching Beyond COVID. An important part of both LSA's DEI Strategic Plan and LSA's Reboot and Reimagine Planning, this initiative will help the College focus on the particular aims and goals of large courses.
This special edition of LCI is open to LSA faculty who taught or are teaching a large course at UM in the COVID-19 pandemic context (courses from Winter 2020 to Winter 2021 academic terms). Together, selected faculty will reflect on some of the lessons learned while teaching large courses during COVID, particularly with regard to hybrid modalities, flexibility in course design, equity and accessibility. By sharing experiences and practices from their teaching, faculty will help create a vision for what teaching equity-minded and accessible large courses can look like beyond COVID. The goal is to plan for a return to campus that takes advantage of both what we have long known and what we have newly learned. We will also consider how large courses might take advantage of the new Central Campus Classroom Building, scheduled to open in Winter 2022.

All LSA faculty (tenured, tenure-track, and lecturers) who:
- Taught a course with 75 or more students between W2020 and W2021; and
- Have experience incorporating evidence-based pedagogies, including inclusive teaching and active learning practices, into their large courses*
*Past participants in the Large Course Initiative are welcome to apply if they meet the two criteria above.
Application & Deadlines
The application deadline for Winter 2021 is Wednesday February 17th, 2021 at 5pm EST. Applicants will be notified about selection no later Monday, March 1, 2021.

Faculty will participate in four discussion-based group meetings on Zoom with LSA colleagues during the Winter 2021/ Spring 2021 terms. Sessions will be framed in relation to these and other topics:
- Equity and Accessibility
- Structure and Flexibility
- Community and Engagement
- Assessment and Scholarship of Learning
The final meeting will also be used to workshop proposals for a $2000 grant that can be used:
- To support future pedagogical innovations in participants' courses;
- To foster similar conversations about Teaching Beyond COVID in participants' home departments; and/or
- To seed disciplinary-based educational research or scholarship of teaching and learning projects.

Expectation for Participants
In addition to meeting on these four dates, participants will complete a small amount of preparatory work in advance of each meeting (e.g. interview colleagues, read a short articles, and/or prepare materials to share with fellow participants). Additionally, faculty will help shape group discussion by informally presenting about their own teaching practices, innovations, and plans for the future.
