Student participation factors into many instructional approaches, whether through discussion, presentations, in- and out-of-class assignments, or group work. Yet it can be challenging to identify transparent and fair methods for grading student participation that balance instructors’ needs for efficiency and flexibility.  This workshop will help instructors clarify their goals for student participation and then examine different strategies for effectively encouraging and assessing it. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas, methods, and criteria for grading participation and for communicating these expectations to their students.
