Assessing Student Participation: What, How, and Why? [Online Workshop]

Student participation factors into many instructional approaches, whether through discussion, presentations, in- and out-of-class assignments, or group work. Yet it can be challenging to identify transparent and fair methods for grading student participation that balance instructors’ needs for efficiency and flexibility.  This online workshop will help instructors clarify their goals for student participation and then examine different strategies for effectively encouraging and assessing it. In the first week, you will explore strategies aimed at helping you think about encouraging and assessing student participation throughout the semester.  You will then have the opportunity to reflect on your goals and current practices for student participation. In the second week, you will write a reflective response and develop a plan to implement some of the strategies into your own teaching practice.

We also offer the same information in a face-to-face session that will be held from 2:00pm-4:00pm on 9/11. Information about the face-to-face session can be accessed by clicking here.
