Assessing Participation: What? How? and Why?

Session Abstract: Student participation factors into many instructional approaches, whether through discussion, presentations, in- and out-of-class assignments, or group work. Yet it can be challenging to identify transparent and equitable methods for grading student participation that balance instructors’ needs for efficiency and flexibility. This blended in-person workshop will help instructors clarify their goals for student participation and then examine different strategies for effectively encouraging and assessing it. Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas, methods, and criteria for grading participation and for communicating these expectations to their students.
Note: In this blended/flipped workshop, participants will be asked to complete brief pre-work to support their deeper engagement in the in-person synchronous session. We expect that participants will spend at least 30 minutes (via Canvas) prior to participating in the 90-minute in-person synchronous session.
