Designing Classroom Activities for Accessibility

Session Format: In-person

Intended Audience: Faculty, Graduate Students

Facilitator(s): Kathryn Hendrickson and Bethany Morrison

Session Abstract: Active learning can make teaching more engaging, provide immediate feedback on student learning, and give students valuable opportunities to practice the skills they need to be successful. Learning experiences designed without a central consideration of accessibility, however, may lead to inequitable outcomes for students with disabilities. In this in-person workshop, participants will engage with a set of guiding principles around accessibility and active learning that will support them in implementing these principles within their own courses. We will offer examples of how to plan active learning opportunities around accessibility before providing dedicated, structured time for participants to workshop their own classroom activities. Due to this workshopping time, this session is intended for instructors who currently implement in-class activities in their courses.
