The Influence of Gender Stereotypes on Role Adoption in Student Teams

Drs. Lorelle Meadows and Denise Sekaquaptewa won a Best Paper Award for their research on student teams at the 2013 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference. Their work shows that, in Engineering 100 group projects, students often adopt stereotypic gender roles (e.g. with men in the role of experts and women in the role of supporters) in their group projects. Despite recognizing the importance of actively engaging with technical content, women tend to persist in these supportive roles throughout their undergraduate career. At this session, Dr. Meadows will present an overview of their research and will offer strategies to affect these patterns of behavior and improve the teamwork experience for all students.
