Overview of the Project:
It is my goal to imporove my knowledge of teaching so that I can become a better teacher. The Interdisciplinary Teacher Education Program will provide me with an opportunity to learn about adult learning and adult learning theory. I will also study curriculum development, the development of syllabi, teaching objectives and how to write test questions. My learning will help me ensure that I am providing the rigor that is expected at the University of Michigan.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:
This rigorous curriculum included curriculum development, examining teaching theory, clinical teaching, evaluation, testing, and the scholarship of teaching in a clinical setting. I got to experience this program with a variety of disciplines, including nursing, computer technology and one person who was developing curriculum to train people to work in a laboratory setting. The funds provided by CRLT assisted with the cost of tuition, books, transportation and lodging. Although I could have completed the program without the support, it eased my personal hardship and allowed me to concentrate on the studies at hand.
Project Achievements:
While in the program I focused my study on Critical Thinking and specific ways that we can incorporate Critical Thinking into Foundation Field Seminar and into our on-site student visits. In January 2011 I presented, to the Office of Field Instruction Team meeting, a professional development session on this topic to assist my peers in looking for ways to include and emphasize critical thinking in both the classroom and in field visits. I also used my new skills in presentations for Psychology 211 and SW 665. In both of these guest lecture sessions I was able to actively involve the class in learning. The TA for Psychology 211 told me that her class had never been so alert and involved the entire semester.
Continuation:
I am using new skill set as we prepare for a new year. I’ve worked with the Director of Field Instruction to create Pre-Field Orientation, and assisted in updated the syllabus for our Field Seminar class.
