Overview of the Project:
As part of my fellowship research into the intersection of the arts of film and architecture, this grant proposal requests funds for a two day screening and panel discussion on the work of two major figures of the American Avant Garde cinema, Gregory Markopoulos and Robert Beavers. Their films are intimately involved with a number of renowned architectural works but also in exploring and challenging notions of architectural space and landscape within film. Robert Beavers, the surviving member of the pair, will be at the screenings to answer questions and will take part in the panel discussion.

Project Objectives:
The project aimed to bring a major figure of American avant garde cinema to the University with films for projection. This program was in the interest of bringing noted films of the avant garde for a unique viewing experience for students and faculty. The goal was also to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between many departments on the campus including Screen Arts and Culture, European Studies and Architecture.
Project Achievements:
The program had an immediate impact on the studio course that I teach at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning as well as other courses taught at the college. The panel discussion after the second day of screenings was also an occasion for faculty from Screen Arts and Culture and Architecture to initiate a dialogue that could continue in future.
Continuation:
The Temenos event in Lyssarea, Greece will occur this July. Potentially, students and faculty that attended the program at the university will also be attending this event.
Dissemination:
I have written an article about the films that were shown that has been accepted for publication by the peer reviewed "Journal of Modern Craft" this coming July. Once this has been published I will be sending a copy to all the faculty in attendance at the event.
Advice to your Colleagues:
In all honesty, although it was well attended, the event should have been much better attended. The films were of a standard to be shown at the major cultural institutions of this country to capacity attendance. This could have been helped by a better publicity campaign, and perhaps more legwork on behalf of students. However, on the budget this would have been unlikely.
