Overview of the Project:
I would like to submit to the CRTL for the Instructional Development Fund for a $500 grant to be used for the ACHNE 2012 Annual Institute- Public Health Nursing: Promoting Healthy Physical, Social, and Global Environments. The Institute will take place in Portland Oregon on June 7-9, 2012. I will need the grant to help pay for the Institute fees of $325, member's fee and to provide for some of the hotel cost, $175. I am willing to pay or find additional funding for the airline cost, meals and incidentals. The primary objective will focus on undergraduate curricula innovations designed to prepare students to promote healthy practice environments. The secondary objectives are to focus on innovative teaching and learning strategies that promote physical, social, culturally congruent and global health in local clinical environments.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:
Objective 1 was to focus on undergraduate curricular innovations designed to prepare students to promote healthy practice environments. Objective 2 was to focus on innovative teaching and learning strategies that promote physical, social, culturally congruent and global health in local clinical environments.
Project Achievements:
I attended the ACHNE Association of Community Health Nursing Educators in Portland Oregon from June 7th to the 9th, 2012. There were 165 Nursing Educators from all over the country and a few outside the U.S. (Taiwan & Canada). The networking was tremendous and I brought a great deal of innovative education back to our Division 2 SON. After talking with many Nurse Educators in Community Health I realized the struggles we have at U of M exist throughout the nation. Nursing education is primarily a hospital based; acute medical model and very little is done in the community setting. The IOM report the Future of Nursing and the ACA point in a different direction for health care system changes. We must move the curriculum more into the community with a prevention model to really change the health care system. I have joined the committee on communication at the ACHNE and also brought information to the other Lecturers. I can now provide strategies to change the curriculum to meet the changing needs of health care.
Continuation:
This project will continue in several ways. First, sharing the information will continue with the faculty (half of the faculty did not know of this organization). I will be involved with ACHNE through the communication committee. I am joining the State Action Coalition to advance the Future of Nursing and changes produced by the ACA. In the fall of 2012 the clinical rotation of students will be using an interdisciplinary model.
Dissemination:
I presented the project's activities at the faculty meeting on June 25, 2012. I shared multiple ideas of new strategies for innovative clinicals and gave the summary document for use of technology. I will continue to support each colleague in the use of new strategies.
Advice to your Colleagues:
The lesson learned was to reach out and go after what is important to you and your student's education. Overall, the process and experience were very pleasant.
