Overview of the Project:
This project proposes to develop a few short movies based on public-domain footage for teaching medieval literature and medieval manuscript illumination in my current course, Spanish 373: From India to Iberia: Eastern Tales and Western Texts.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:
-To develop short video material to help teach medieval narratives and to introduce manuscript material to students of medieval Spanish literature.-To use material that was fully in the public domain and not at risk of copyright violation (as was the case with earlier projects related to this material)
Project Achievements:
This project allowed me to develop two short animated movies (both fully in the public domain) to teach medieval frame-tale narratives. They can be viewed (in Spanish) on YouTube at:http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/13293870/introduccion-a-los-cuentos-en-marcohttp://www.xtranormal.com/watch/13293893/el-dean-de-santiago-y-don-illan-de-toledoIn the end, I did not use FinalCutPro at all--I found other software already available on Mac to be simpler and easier to use. Also, I used a program online (Xtranormal) that opened up a new avenue for creating movie content related to medieval texts.
Continuation:
Yes, I was not able to make use of all materials provided by the grant. In the future, I plan to use animated versions of texts to help model student projects.
Dissemination:
The links to these files have been shared with colleagues and other medievalists in the field and are open for use by all who teach this material.
Advice to your Colleagues:
My biggest challenge was timing. Some of the material I ordered came late (such as my external storage drive) and my own computer was not fit to store the files as I worked on them. I recommend getting started early! Now that I have a start on this project, I plan to incorporate it into future classes as well.
