Overview of the Project:
Develop a rocket launching activity for student teams to compete in designing, building and launching a soda straw rocket using a simple air powered launcher. The activity is designed to help students observe the impact of different design decisions on the aerodynamics (as measured by distance a rocket travels). The Dorm Room Lab will be implemented in AOSS 101 (Introduction to Rocket Science and Engineering) that currently has 200 students enrolled with a wait-list.

Project Objectives:

Objective of the project was to incorporate several hands-on Dorm Room Labs into AOSS 101. The funds were used to buy supplies for Dorm Room Labs. The funds (with some discretionary funds) purchased magnets, compasses and UV Beads.

Project Achievements:

The Dorm Room Lab concept was recognized this year with the 2014 TIP Award. I'm currently writing up a paper describing the concept to disseminate the idea more broadly.

Continuation:
Yes, I am teaching a new course (AOSS 103) in the Fall 14 semester that will also use dorm room labs. I will continue to use dorm room labs in AOSS 101 in W15 as well. I will be asking for funds from my department to support this effort and if no departmental funds are available, will use my discretionary funds.
Dissemination:
I presented a poster about Dorm Room labs at the TIP Award symposium. As mentioned also writing up a paper.
Advice to your Colleagues:
Take advantage of CRLT professional development seminars and resources and if funds are needed, propose to CRLT grant competitions.
