By viewing and discussing various vignettes portraying P&T panel discussions, audiences practice identifying and responding to dynamics that can undermine a fair and accountable tenure process. They also consider big questions related to evaluating colleagues for tenure and promotion in the current moment. This session was developed in collaboration with the U-M ADVANCE Program, the College of LSA, and the College of Engineering. It is appropriate for all individuals involved in the evaluation of faculty candidates for tenure and/or promotion.
The session can be offered in person in 60, 90, or 120 minute versions. It is available by request, depending on the Players capacity.
In this session, participants will:
- Consider how bias can undermine the goal of a fair and accountable review.
- Practice strategies for addressing concerns about fairness or accountability within the review process.
- Explore emerging questions and promotion and tenure evaluation.

Excellent and not what I expected! Thought provoking!
This was an excellently crafted workshop. It was far more effective than I would have imagined - the scenarios were very realistic as were the faculty roles depicted. Every character was attempting to adhere to higher goals and arguably was trying to do the "right thing" - the interactions depicted multiple dynamics as well. It gave one a lot to think about - and so was far more efficient than the usual talking head/power point presentation. The moderator was very effective in eliciting and guiding discussion. Excellent work!
I like the combination of CRLT Player skits with direct content and discussion. The TRP workshop would have been very disengaging had it been all direct content of policy and best practices. I especially appreciated the workshop leaders, as they kept things moving at a good pace and their interjections and amplifications of key points was really helpful.
I very much enjoyed the brief vignettes which... allowed the group to tackle many different types of issues. Sara and Christy are superior facilitators with great knowledge and insight. I am always impressed by them.
The vignettes raised specific questions but were ambiguous enough to stimulate a lot of discussion, and framed ideas in ways I hadn't thought of.
Based on examples rather than just abstract concepts. The CRLT Players helped a lot!
