Current political realities have caused many members of the higher education community to contemplate their understandings of core academic tenants. These include the meaning of free speech, the limits and possibilities of academic freedom, and the ways that they participate on campus, in classrooms, and in public spaces. This fast-paced session moves fluidly between theatrical scenarios, interactive quizzes, and conversation with campus experts, providing participants with a basis for understanding the role-related boundaries of protected speech. Across the session, participants think together about the contours of the current moment and how they want to participate in civic dialogue.
This session is appropriate for faculty, graduate students, and academic leaders. The session can be offered in person in 60, 90, or 120 minute versions. It will be available across the academic year, beginning in mid-October.
In this session, participants will:
- Explore a range of authentic scenarios in which tensions around free speech and/or academic freedom regularly emerge
- Gauge how their understandings of protected speech do/do not align with the law and current university policies
- Reflect on how they will account for the constraints and opportunities of their role as well as their personal values in speech-related matters
