The Campus-Wide New Faculty Orientation (NFO), sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT), is designed to help new faculty members prepare for their first year at the University of Michigan. The program will include welcoming remarks by President Domenico Grasso and Provost Laurie McCauley. It will also include a CRLT Players performance and interactive sessions in which faculty can share experiences and strategize about good teaching. The program will also feature a luncheon during which Vice President for Research Arthur Lupia will speak, followed by an Information Fair with representatives from key University offices.

This orientation will not provide information regarding benefits, parking, or other Human Resources related materials. For more information, please visit the U-M Human Resources website.

Frequently Asked Questions about NFO:

When and where is NFO?

The Campus-Wide New Faculty Orientation is held every year before the beginning of the Fall semester. The next orientation will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at the Michigan League (911 N. University Avenue).

Am I required to attend NFO?

As a new faculty member, you are cordially invited to attend in your first year of your U-M appointment. Please check with your department, school, or college about any requirements they might have for your attendance.

I can’t attend the orientation. Can I still receive informational resources?

Yes, resources will be shared post-event with all who cannot attend.

What should I bring to NFO?

We recommend that you dress in layers, as the temperature in the Michigan League can vary. Also, many attendees in the past found it helpful to have something to take notes on.

Where can I park?

Please see the Central Campus Parking Site for structures around the Michigan League. For additional tips, check out Parking Hints to help you find available visitor and permit parking spots.

For information on campus-wide parking, including permits, rates, and updates, visit U-M’s Logistics, Transportation & Parking department.
