Equity and Excellence in Tenure and Promotion Practices

In this session, audiences learn about how inequities operate in various ways for faculty, and consider different frameworks for evaluating candidates’ research, teaching, and service equitably. By viewing and discussing various vignettes portraying T&P panel discussions, audiences practice identifying and responding to interpersonal dynamics and structural challenges that can undermine a fair tenure process. Challenges explored include epistemic exclusion, gender bias, and bias related to navigating COVID-19. This sketch was developed in collaboration with the U-M ADVANCE Program and the College of LSA. This session is appropriate for individuals involved in the evaluation of faculty candidates for tenure and/or promotion.

The session is 120 minutes, and only offered in an in-person format. It will be available in September, 2024.

**The theatrical case study in this session shows biased behaviors and structural problems that evidence systemic inequities such as sexism, racism, heterosexism, and ableism.

In this session, participants will:

  • Consider how inequity operates in T&P evaluations.
  • Practice disrupting bias when it occurs in deliberations.
  • Reflect on the continued need for change in the tenure and promotion system.

What people have said about Equity and Excellence in Tenure and Promotion Practices :
Very well done, the most effective diversity, equity, and inclusion event I have attended.
Excellent and not what I expected! Thought provoking!
This was an excellently crafted workshop. It was far more effective than I would have imagined - the scenarios were very realistic as were the faculty roles depicted. Every character was attempting to adhere to higher goals and arguably was trying to do the "right thing" - the interactions depicted multiple dynamics as well. It gave one a lot to think about - and so was far more efficient than the usual talking head/power point presentation. The moderator was very effective in eliciting and guiding discussion. Excellent work!
