Michelle Aebersold, School of Nursing, incorporates virtual reality simulations into management and leadership students' clinical hours in order to to improve students' skills in priority setting, conflict management, and teamwork.
A virtual hospital unit was designed in SL on Wolverine Island. The unit consists of 8 beds, a conference room, a nursing lounge, and various types of medical equipment. Three scenarios were developed including simulations of:
- a difficult nurse-physician communication interaction
- a medication error and subsequent patient treatment/follow-up (including feedback to a peer)
- priority setting for a patient assignment and delegation to unit assistive personnel
Objectives for each scenario were aligned with course objectives, the baccalaureate essentials, and QSEN objectives.
