Overview of the Project:
The purpose of this project is to help current Korean language students maintain and improve their Korean proficiency over the summer break, and ease their transition to a new Korean course in the following year by establishing a weekly online conversation club. During a long break, students rarely use Korean, and often forget what they have learned, making it difficult for them to recall their language skills and speak fluently in the next year. A weekly online conversation club will help students practice their Korean and motivate them to continue learning, while also fostering a sense of community within the Korean program.

Project Objectives:

1. To help current Korean language students maintain and improve their Korean proficiency over the summer break

2. To ease their transition to a new Korean course in the following year

3. To motivate them to continue learning

4. To foster a sense of community

Project Achievements:

The most useful aspect of this club for the students was maintaining their Korean conversation skills throughout the summer, during a period when they might not have been exposed to the Korean language. While the club itself may not have been sufficient for this task, I believe that the new vocabulary the students acquired was helpful. It served as a reminder for them to engage in additional independent study if they desired.

The weekly conversations with native speakers were a source of motivation for them to learn the language. While it's difficult to determine if their Korean improved significantly within the short timeframe, students were content with the feedback provided by the tutors. They also felt more at ease with speaking as they approached the end of the project.

Additionally, they were able to establish positive relationships both among themselves and with the Korean tutors.

Dissemination:
I plan to share this project with colleagues in both my program and department.
Advice to your Colleagues:
Due to the voluntary nature of the club, attendance was not consistent. I should explore ways to encourage students to maintain their attendance. If I continue to oversee the club in the future, I plan to announce this project in class before the summer break.
