This introductory workshop provides an opportunity for GSIs in the Social Sciences and Humanities to learn about active learning strategies aimed at improving discussions in the classroom. Through a series of group activities, participants will identify the attributes of a productive discussion and consider how to select appropriate activities based on individual course goals, class size, and classroom setup. Participants will also discuss strategies to deal with common challenges to promoting and managing discussions, including disengagement, resistance, and conflict. Strategies covered in this workshop range in complexity and include icebreakers, group brainstorming, think-pair-share, roundtable discussion, and jigsaw discussion. This workshop will be most helpful to instructors who have little experience in leading discussions.
