Facilitating Classroom Discussions in the Social Sciences and Humanities
This introductory workshop is geared toward first-time instructors in the Social Sciences and Humanities and will focus on strategies for enhancing the quality of classroom discussions. During the session, participants will consider how identities and facilitation styles influence discussion and classroom dynamics, discuss and practice various techniques for phrasing and designing effective discussion questions, and brainstorm strategies for productively responding to common discussion facilitation challenges. Lastly, instructors will have an opportunity to reflect on which of the many techniques, activities, and strategies best fit their own classroom contexts and learning goals.
