Leading Discussions in the Social Sciences and Humanities

This introductory workshop for GSIs in the social sciences and humanities presents active learning strategies aimed at improving discussions in the classroom. Workshop participants will acquire a toolbox of strategies for planning and facilitating discussions. Key topics include creating a climate conducive for discussion, framing effective questions, encouraging diverse participation, and responding effectively to students’ questions and comments. Workshop participants will also learn facilitation techniques to address common discussion challenges such as silence, disengagement, resistance, conflict, and varied levels of student preparedness for class.
