Providing Support to Students in Challenging Moments

As we continue to navigate the many challenges students confront (such as the pandemic, in addition to the typical stresses of academic work and personal self-discovery), instructors are seeing more students who are experiencing difficult situations and demonstrating acute distress. This interactive synchronous session is designed to help instructors respond to students in distress. This session will provide practical skills, share some language that will help in conversations with students, and introduce UM resources focused on the continuum of support for students. Participants will discuss case studies describing situations instructors might confront, and learn from our panel of campus experts about ways to approach students experiencing and exhibiting signs of distress, including what to do and what not to do.
