Facilitating Discussions in the Social Sciences and Humanities

This workshop provides an opportunity for GSIs in the Social Sciences and Humanities to experiment with active learning strategies aimed at improving discussions in the classroom. Strategies include brainstorming, minute papers, think-pair-share, case studies, and jigsaw discussion. Though a series of group activities, we will identify the attributes of a productive discussion and consider how to select an appropriate techniques based on individual course goals, class size, and classroom setup. We will also develop strategies to deal with common challenges to promoting and managing discussions including disengagement, resistance, and conflict.
