Overview of the Project:
To attend workshops at the annual two-week Paper and Book Intensive (PBI), which is being held in May 2019 in Saugatuck, MI at Ox-Bow School of Art. The series of workshops offered by PBI will expand my skills in the field of book arts, which I will incorporate into my own art practice as a printmaker and book artist, as well as integrate into the drawing and printmaking courses I teach in the Creative Arts program at the Residential College. Book Arts is an expansive field that includes bookbinding, paper construction, printmaking, sequential image development and the written word. PBI is an immersive series of workshops that broach each of these topics, offering a range of options for participants to choose those that most align with their interests.

Project Objectives:

The objective was to gain skills related to book arts and printmaking that I can apply to future projects and integrate in my course offerings.

Project Achievements:

The workshops I attended included book binding onto raised cords without the use of specialized binding equipment, shaped woodblock prints that utilize the scroll saw, and pochoir (stenciling) techniques. As Paper and Book Intensive was held this past May, I have not yet had the opportunity to incorporate these skills into my classes. However, as the RC printmaking and drawing studio owns a scroll saw, I do plan to introduce it this year to students who choose to focus on relief printing. I also plan to introduce pochoir in my drawing course this semester.

Continuation:
No.
Dissemination:
The pochoir book that I completed during the workshop period was shown in an exhibition titled, "Structural Elements: Contemporary Book Arts," curated by Laura Beyer and Erin K. Schmidt at Hatch Art Gallery in Hamtramck, MI during the month of August 2019.
