Overview of the Project:
The project will focus on the development of DEI minded course materials for the Spanish Topics Course Gender Equality in Latin America. I will be working in collaboration with colleagues and contacts in Mexico, Argentina and Costa Rica, in order to get a variety of perspectives. The course material development will include developing level appropriate video and/or audio recordings, as well
as written testimonies. These primary sources will then be the basis for developing language acquisition activities as outlined below.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:

The objectives of this project are to develop authentic course materials for Spanish 232 Gender Equality in Latin America. These materials include level appropriate readings, videos and audio recordings with accompanying activities for the students (ie pre-reading or pre-listening activities, comprehension questions and discussion questions.) The vocabulary and grammar components of the course both need to be completely adapted to reflect and reinforce the content.

Project Achievements:

Although still a work in progress, I have developed:

  • a comprehensive syllabus for the course
  • 5 units of study including readings, audio/video for each unit
  • vocabulary lists and activities reflecting each unit
  • grammar practice reflecting the content of each unit
  • quizzes for each unit
  • oral and written assessments
Continuation:
In the fall of 2022, I will be teaching 2 sections of the course. This course offers a current and relevant “hot” topic to the other Spanish 232 topics classes offered. Starting in W23 I will be teaching three sections. I am also developing a Global Course Connections (GCC) course to follow up from the course. This will offer students the chance to delve deeper into the topic in a local community in Mérida, Mexico.
Dissemination:
I have shared my course with the new Spanish 231 Topics Coordinator. I will also be sharing via the Language Resource Center and may participate in a panel discussion.
