Overview of the Project:
The goal of this project is deliver an interactive, on-demand elective course in oncology nursing care to undergraduates in the School of Nursing. The course will use Google's Product Suite to create a collaborative learning environment in which students can interact with faculty and each other outside of a traditional classroom environment. Use of online collaborative content via Google will allow integration of the course into the busy clinical schedules of fourth-year nursing students.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:
1) Evaluate the impact of using the Google Product Suite on individual student learning and satisfaction with team-based assignments.
Project Achievements:
The PI has implemented the Google Product Suite in three separate courses: one undergraduate elective in cancer care, and two graduate programs in nursing. Students use the Google Docs and Google Hangouts to complete team-based case studies and other assignments when they are off campus. Faculty are able to view individual student contributions, comment on student teams' interim work before final submission, and grade final assignments rapidly. In addition, the PI implemented the CATME system to assess team performance (I learned of this technology during the TTI). In teaching evaluations, students rated the team assessment process as a strength and identified after intial technology struggles, the google applications were effective at improving collaborative learning projects.
Continuation:
I continue to use the Google applications in my courses and also use CATME to assess team performance.
Dissemination:
I have mentored three faculty in the use of Google Docs and hangouts for their courses. In Winter 2014, I delivered a presentation on the use of CATME to assess team performance at the School of Nursing. Two other faculty are now using this system in their courses.
Advice to your Colleagues:
1) Make sure you spend time in class for everyone to gain comfort with the technology in question. 2) Assess familiarity before implementation. 3) Be prepared to help struggling students. 4) Next time, I would ask specific questions about satisfaction with the technology I have adopted.
