Overview of the Project:
The Global Cinematography Institute (GCI) is devoted to the education of advanced/post-graduate filmmakers and professional cinematographers in the traditional techniques of the trade as well as the newly expanding digital and virtual creative methods in the filmmaking industry. Each summer GCI offers an intensive two-week workshop in Los Angeles taught by film professionals, including members of the American Society of Cinematographers, an elite group of award winning cinematographers whose artistic output has been recognized by critics and audiences internationally. I would like to attend a training session at GCI in order to integrate new technological changes into my work as a filmmaker, as well as gain experience with developing fields of cinematography for inclusion in my future courses. I am seeking support from the Lecturer's Professional Development Fund to help defray costs for attending a two-week intensive during the summer of 2015.

Project Objectives:

Learning to further master traditional cinematographic skills under the tutelage of top industry professionals, as well as expanding knowledge in new areas of the craft. Learning to streamline the image-making process in order to make my artistic process more efficient, and more successful. Bringing a sense of new technologies and methods of cinematography into the classroom for students to have a better sense of changes in the field.

Project Achievements:

My time and the GCI workshop was an extremely valuable and rewarding experience for me as an artist, a technical craftsperson, and a teacher. The knowledge I gained from these industry professionals, as well as working alongside many highly skilled fellow attendees, has given me many jumping off points for thinking about implementing new technologies in my own creative process. The multiple masterclasses and technical workshops helped to de-mystify many of the intricacies of working with digital technologies, and also giving a very good sense of how many of these technologies are likely to shift in the future. I came away with a much larger perspective on the cinematographic profession as a whole, and what the current changes imply for future of moving images as art.

Continuation:
I hope to pursue future study and workshops with GCI at a later date, to further develop these new skills, and gain a deeper understanding of upcoming developments in technology. Every increment of skill and technical improvement will likely lead to a more robust implementation of these methods in my teaching of my current courses as well as courses I will teach in the future.
