Overview of the Project:
The goal of this project is to create and integrate 3-dimensional (3-D) anatomical images into curated, curriculum-specific virtual reality (VR) experiences for students in Anatomy curricula. These VR experiences will be curricularly-incorporated into existing U-M Anatomy courses and publicly available as free resources by incorporation into our existing web resources.

Project Objectives:

The main objective of this project was to create and integrate 3-dimensional (3-D) anatomical images into curated, curriculum-specific virtual reality (VR) experiences for students in Anatomy curricula. These VR experiences were incorporated into existing U-M Anatomy courses (first year medical anatomy, first year dental anatomy, & ANAT 403) and publicly available as free resources by incorporation into our existing web resources.

 

Project Achievements:

The inclusion of VR resources within Anatomy curricula has been successful based on both qualitative feedback from students and webpage users as well as student assessment data and student evaluations of teaching. The VR resources had a substantial impact on students’ abilities to prepare for lab-based assessments and successfully complete laboratory remediation assignments.

Continuation:
We are continuing to develop new and more interactive modalities of extended reality resources (VR, 360 photography and videography) for all of our Anatomy curricula.
Dissemination:
BlueLink VR resources are openly available for all U-M students and colleagues currently, as well as to the general public through BlueLink web pages. We have presented qualitative feedback on BlueLink resources, including film at the American Association of Anatomists meetings in 2022 and 2023. Further research and presentations are expected to continue.
