Overview of the Project:
This research project will examine how implementation of the flipped classroom can improve traditional teaching during the Obstetrics and Gynecology third year medical student clerkship. Online lectures will be created to be viewed prior to a faculty teaching session, which can then be an interactive, case-based discussion. We will require half of the students to log in and complete the online modules prior to the teaching session. The other half of students will be encouraged, but not required to complete the online modules. We will examine student satisfaction and use patterns, as well as learner knowledge gain by evaluating subject examination scores.
Final Report Fields
Project Objectives:

1.Develop a flipped classroom model including a pre-class assignment of high content videos (VPrimers) and a class-time case based active learning activity (iGage) for the gynecologic oncology portion of the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. 2.Determine how many students used the VPrimers in preparation for the iGage learning activity, and whether the students who watched the VPrimers performed better in the iGage learning activity. 3.Develop a student satisfaction assessment for the VPrimers and iGage learning activity and determine whether students who viewed the VPrimers had higher satisfaction evaluations of the iGage learning activity

Project Achievements:

Medical student satisfaction has been extremely high with both aspects of the flipped classroom. In response to the question "I support expanding the use of this method in the future" the mean rating for the VPrimers was 3.48 and for the iGage was 3.67 (1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=agree and 4=strongly agree). In response to the statement "this was preferable to traditional lecture format" the mean rating for the VPrimers was 3.32 and for the iGage was 3.66 (1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=agree and 4=strongly agree).

Continuation:
Yes, we will continue to use the two sides of the flipped classroom for the gynecologic portion of the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. In addition, we have already begun using iGage for the menopause and infertility didactic sessions. We are investigating student satisfaction with different pre-class assignments, specifically VPrimers versus peer reviewed review articles versus powerpoint presentations. In addition, we are expanding the use of the iGage method in the General Surgery and Internal Medicine clerkships.
Dissemination:
I am submitting the data from this project to our national educational conference APGO-CREOG in August, 2013. In addition, I am presenting the use of the flipped classroom in September to University of Michigan Medical School faculty as part of the Clinical Teaching Skills series "Not another boring lecture."
